Learning to predict threat: computation, circuits, and

interference

Correct prediction of threat is key to survival and to well-being. Anxiety disorders entail threat-related behaviours in the absence of threat. In my talk, I will focus on the cross-species paradigm of Pavlovian threat learning. Building on a cognitive-computational approach, I will discuss what is being learned by which psychological mechanisms. I will then present fMRI data that help elucidate the neural systems-level implementation of these mechanisms. Finally, I will discuss behavioural, pharmacological and TMS approaches to interfering with human threat memory, some which could be leveraged for clinical application.
