Taking the pulse of social cognition: interoception, self-awareness and alteroception

At the heart of social cognition is our ability to distinguish between self and other and correctly attribute mental and affective states to their origin. Nevertheless, little is known about the mechanisms that facilitate this process. Recently, interoception, that is the perception and awareness of internal bodily states,  has become central to our understanding of how visceral changes underpin emotional experience as well as self-awareness. As such, recent theoretical postulations suggest that interoception helps us navigate the self-other distinction in social relations. The talk will present a theoretical framework and empirical results that speak to the crucial role that interoceptive signals and awareness thereof play for self- and social-awareness.
