Department 8: Educational Psychology

The Department of Educational Psychology investigates the behavior and mind of people in educational situations. This includes the behavior of teachers as well as the students in terms of dealing with heterogeneity, classroom management, cooperative learning, the teacher-student relationship and social skills, e.g. as predictors of school success and integration or inclusion in school classes. Our goal is to provide relevant knowledge that expands the understanding of teaching and learning processes in the classroom and to derive evidence-based, practical actions to be taken and also to evaluate them, in order to support school-based teaching-learning processes and the learning success of students as well as to optimize the professionalization of teachers.

In teaching, we focus on Helmke’s model of teaching effectiveness and address successful learning as a result of the complex interplay of expertise of teachers, instruction quality, learning abilities, learning and contextual conditions.
